Woman ‘clings onto car’ to stop thief after keys and bank card stolen

A suspect has been charged after a woman’s car keys and bank card were stolen from her house.

The victim was also assaulted and had to take action to prevent her vehicle from being driven away during the incident.

A man known to the woman visited her Newark home at around 11 pm on 1 April before stealing her car keys and demanding money.

He also took the victim’s bank card and tried, unsuccessfully, to drive her car away, with the woman clinging to the vehicle to try to stop him.

She was also assaulted and threatened by the man, who then walked away from the scene with her bank card, having already damaged her home’s doorframe with a plant pot.

Police have been investigating since this happened and managed to arrest a suspect over the weekend, both in connection with that incident and separate allegations of harassment against the same woman.

Bradley Jones, of Yorke Drive, Newark, has since been charged with theft, aggravated vehicle taking, assault, threats to kill, harassment, criminal damage and driving without insurance.

Having appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (26 May), the 34-year-old was released on bail with strict conditions until his next court appearance on 16 November.

These conditions include banning Jones from contacting the victim in any way or entering her street, and having a nighttime curfew imposed, which will be monitored by an electronic tag fitted to him.

PC Simon Wragg, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This was a very serious incident that resulted in the victim being assaulted, threatened and having her property stolen.

“We have now charged a suspect in connection with what happened, as well as other offences, so hope this action provides her with some reassurance.”
