The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has upgraded the rating for Clifton Manor Nursing Home in Clifton, Nottingham from good to outstanding following an inspection in August.
Clifton Manor Nursing Home is a nursing home providing care for people over 65 with dementia. 29 people were living at the home at the time of the inspection. CQC carried out this inspection as part of its continual monitoring of services.
CQC has upgraded the ratings for how safe, effective, caring and responsive the home is from good to outstanding, and has again rated how well-led the service is as good.
Greg Rielly, deputy director of adult social care in the east midlands region, said:
“We found Clifton Manor Nursing Home provided exceptional care built around what really matters to each person living there. Leaders had created a culture of continuous learning and improvement that made a difference to people’s daily lives.
“It was clear that staff knew people extremely well and used that knowledge to shape support around each individual’s changing needs, rather than expecting people to fit into a standard routine. One relative told us staff always knew what their family member needed, even when they couldn’t communicate themselves.
“We saw staff encourage people to do as much as they could for themselves. They organised breakfast clubs where people chose their own food and prepared it independently, helping them maintain everyday skills and stay involved in familiar routines. Staff welcomed relatives who took part in life at the home, sharing meals with people and staying closely connected.
“Leaders and staff managed risks appropriately to give people as much independence as possible. Staff helped people do the things they enjoyed by carefully managing risk so they could keep living full lives.
“The home also provided thoughtful and respectful end of life care. Staff worked with people and their families to plan ahead so people’s wishes and beliefs shaped their final days, and staff supported families through the process too.
“Leaders and staff at Clifton Manor should be proud of what they’ve achieved, and I’d encourage other services to look at their approach.”
Inspectors found:
- Staff consistently engaged with people in a kind and caring manner, respecting their preferences and choices.
- Leaders acted on feedback from resident and relative meetings, increasing activity choices and reintroducing initiatives to promote hydration.
- The home introduced cognitive stimulation therapy sessions for people with dementia that improved their confidence, mood and relationships with others.
- Leaders analysed patterns in falls and adjusted aspects of care including equipment checks and staff deployment accordingly, reducing the number of falls.
- The home achieved oral health accreditation and trained staff to improve their skills in supporting people’s dental care.
- Staff made prompt referrals to healthcare professionals when people’s health deteriorated, helping some people avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.
