Work has begun to widen the pedestrian and cycle crossing on Radcliffe Road in West Bridgford.
Temporary two-way traffic lights will be in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm, with a diversion for pedestrians.
The work at the junction with Cyril Road began on Monday 2 November. The first phase is due to finish on Friday 4 December, when work will pause to reduce disruption over Christmas. Crews are due back on Monday 4 January 2027.
The existing toucan crossing will be widened to give pedestrians, cyclists and other wheeled users more space. New sensors will adjust the crossing time according to how quickly people reach the other side.
Councillor Bert Bingham, Nottinghamshire County Council’s cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “The technology detects when users are still on the crossing and times the lights to stay on red until the pedestrian or cyclist is safely across.”
Via East Midlands is carrying out the work using funding from Nottingham City Council’s Transforming Cities Fund allocation. The crossing upgrade is part of a wider scheme that includes the recently opened Waterside Bridge over the River Trent, improvements to riverside paths and a new path connecting to Holme Road.
