Police have launched an investigation into a collision on the A1 which has tragically claimed the life of a baby boy.
Officers were called to a report that a yellow Honda Jazz had left the road approximately 500 yards from the Spittlegate junction of the southbound carriageway, before colliding with a tree and coming to rest on the carriageway. It is not believed that any other vehicles were involved.
The collision was reported to have occurred just after 10.50pm on Thursday, 2 January.
A seven-month-old baby in the vehicle sustained serious injuries in the collision. He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital but sadly passed away just after 5am on Friday morning.
The baby’s family is being supported by specially trained officers. A woman travelling in the same car suffered serious injuries, while two other people in the vehicle were not seriously injured.
The road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene. The southbound carriageway remains closed by Highways as investigative work continues along the roadside.
Police are now investigating the cause of the collision. While they are keeping an open mind, they are considering whether icy conditions on the carriageway in that area may have been a contributing factor.
The police are appealing to anyone who may have been driving in the area over the past few days to come forward with information or dashcam footage showing road conditions during that time.
Officers are also keen to review any footage of the collision itself and are asking anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and who has not yet spoken with them to get in touch.
