Nottinghamshire County Council has responded to a petition from residents of Abbey Park, West Bridgford, calling for improved public transport links following changes to Nottingham City Transport (NCT) bus services.
The 286-signature petition, presented by Councillor Penny Gowland on behalf of the Abbey Park Community Association (APCA), sought adjustments to ensure better accessibility for residents, particularly those near Buckfast Way.
The petition highlighted the challenges posed by recent route revisions, which removed the direct connection between Abbey Park and Morrisons supermarket. While the connection remains possible through a same-stop transfer on Alford Road between services 5 and 6, the 0.3-mile walk to the nearest stop remains a significant barrier for some residents, particularly those with mobility issues.
In response, council officers engaged with Nottingham City Transport to explore potential improvements. NCT has agreed to trial a limited, off-peak diversion of service 5 through Buckfast Way, utilising the existing turning circle adjacent to sheltered accommodation. The diversion, expected to operate hourly during the middle of the day, aims to improve connectivity with service 6 and enhance accessibility for residents.
The new arrangement is scheduled for review in March 2025, with further details regarding timetables and the exact start date to be communicated to residents, Councillor Gowland, and the APCA.
The council considered several options before reaching this solution. A new, dedicated bus service for Buckfast Way was deemed unfeasible within the existing budget. However, by working with NCT, a commercial adjustment to the current service was achieved without requiring additional public funds.
The “do nothing” option, relying on the existing 7-minute walk to the nearest bus stop, was also dismissed, as council officers prioritised addressing residents’ concerns.
