A West Bridgford family is hoping to mark a remarkable milestone by collecting 102 birthday cards for a local man who will soon celebrate his 102nd birthday.
Bernard Miller, who turns 102 on 9 May, has lived through more than a century of history, including serving during the Second World War. He was part of the Royal Artillery and fought in the Battle of Monte Cassino, one of the most significant and challenging campaigns of the war.

After his military service, Bernard went on to build a career as a scientist and later worked as a lecturer, sharing his knowledge with students in universities and hospitals. His family describe him as someone who has led an extraordinary life and continues to inspire those around him.

Now, as he is no longer able to get out and about, his family are bringing the celebrations to him. They are aiming to collect 102 birthday cards — one for each year of his life — to ensure the occasion is marked in a memorable way.
The idea has already attracted strong support locally, with care homes, schools and nurseries getting involved. Community groups and businesses have also stepped forward, including an Armed Forces and Veterans breakfast club which has invited Bernard to attend on his birthday.

Meanwhile, The Willow Tree pub in West Bridgford has offered to provide him with a complimentary Sunday dinner as part of the celebrations.
The family say the response so far has been “phenomenal” and are encouraging anyone who would like to take part to get in touch to request details on where to send a card.

They hope the gesture will help recognise not only Bernard’s milestone birthday, but also his service and contribution over the years, while bringing a moment of connection and celebration to someone who has seen more than a century of life.
Anyone wishing to send a birthday card is asked to contact the family directly for further details.
