Rushcliffe Borough Council has joined organisations across the country in raising a flag to mark the beginning of celebrations ahead of Armed Forces Day on June 27.
Leader of the Council Cllr Simon Robinson and Deputy Leader Cllr Debbie Mason joined fellow political and group leaders, Cllr Ben Gray, Cllr Rod Jones and Cllr Richard Mallender to raise the flag in line with social distancing.
Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for everyone to show their support for those defending the UK and its interests as part of the Armed Forces community, which includes current servicepeople, veterans, cadets and their families.
Cllr Robinson said: “Whilst we have been unable to celebrate in the usual fashion this year, it is very important we all still take the time to recognise the significant contributions of our service people and to give them our support.
“They, and their families, have made huge sacrifices for our country and this is our chance to thank them.
“We are proud to raise the flag at Rushcliffe Arena to show our respects to those who serve or have served in our Armed Forces.”
Celebrations to mark Armed Forces Day take place each year on the final Saturday in June to help boost morale for service members and as a chance for communities to show their recognition.
In Rushcliffe, the occasion is usually celebrated with the annual Proms in the Park concert organised by the Borough Council and featuring a wealth of local choirs, bands and community groups.
Due to COVID-19, this year’s summer event has been cancelled, with Councillors following social distancing guidelines to recognise the flag raising as safely and respectfully as possible.
