Arrests after vulnerable man targeted in Wollaton distraction burglary

Police investigating a distraction burglary on a man in his eighties have now made multiple arrests.

Two people reportedly helped themselves to items after repeatedly talking their way into the vulnerable victim’s home.

After being invited into the property the first time, one of the guests distracted the man while the other rifled through his belongings.

They then left the Wollaton address before returning a short while later with the intention of trying to steal from him again.

A watch and quantities of cash were stolen from the man at some point during the visits, which happened around 6.30am on 13 September.

The victim discovered the items had gone missing soon after, although the police weren’t notified until two days later (15 September).

Police conducted extensive inquiries in the weeks that followed and were able to identify a suspect and bring them into custody last Tuesday (8 October).

An 18-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Police then arrested a second suspect – another 18-year-old man – on suspicion of the same offence on Sunday (13 October).

Both suspects have been bailed with strict conditions to stay away from the road in question.

Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The people involved in this incident went out of their way to knowingly deceive a vulnerable man.

“After talking their way into his home, they then made a conscious effort to distract him so they could steal his belongings.

“This was a despicable crime and we’re determined to do whatever we can to bring those responsible to justice.

“While we’ve arrested two suspects in connection with this offence, our inquiries are still very much ongoing as we try to get to the bottom of what happened.

“Bearing this in mind, we’d plead with anyone who has any information to please come forward so that we can act on it.”

Anyone with information is asked to report it the police on 101, quoting incident 431 of 15 September 2024, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
