Award winning coffee shop is latest tenant to open at Newark development

A Lincoln-based coffee shop is bringing great-tasting coffees, teas, and treats to Newark after moving into one of the units at the new Beaumond Cross development in Newark Town Centre.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has invested in bringing this area of the town to life, introducing a number of exciting tenants to the site.

Work began in 2021 with the redevelopment of the former Robin Hood Hotel into the Travelodge Hotel and three commercial units.

Stokes Tea & Coffee has taken occupation of the last unit, meaning that all three of the units are now occupied. Without the District Council’s involvement, this area would likely have been neglected.

Stokes Tea & Coffee, which has other stores in Lincolnshire, opens on Monday, 18 November.

This popular family business has over 120 years of experience in sourcing, roasting, blending, and supplying its own coffee. In 2020, they were finalists in the Great British Food Awards as well as receiving star awards for their very own blends of coffee and tea.

They take a creative approach to making coffee with their environmentally friendly roaster, which allows them to craft signature blends for customers to enjoy at the peak of freshness while showcasing their roasting process right before your eyes.

They have a unique way of reducing waste too, transforming vegetable trimmings and smaller potatoes into delicious soups, quiches, and pies. With a focus on fresh, seasonal produce, their menu offers both variety and quality, with each dish crafted to perfection.

Councillor Claire Penny, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said:

“The opening of this store is great news for residents of Newark. It will breathe fresh life into the town and add to our already excellent array of independent coffee shops and restaurants in the heart of our town.

“We’ve worked hard in bringing in family-oriented and independent businesses to Newark, which add that personal touch when visitors shop here. They’re also leading the way in using environmentally friendly techniques to bring an excellent product to our high street.”

The Newark café is one of Stokes Tea & Coffee’s most modern locations yet. Its industrial design is inspired by their wholesale roots, and playful graffiti walls bring an urban, youthful vibe. It’s the perfect spot for every occasion, whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee on the go, relaxing at the roastery window seat for a bit of people-watching, or setting up in the cosy restaurant area for a longer stay. It will also be open into the evenings on Fridays and Saturdays.

Nick Peel, Managing Director at Stokes Tea & Coffee, said:

“We’re thrilled to be opening a brand-new Stokes Café in Newark. Having been a long-standing business in Lincolnshire, roasting and serving coffee since 1902, we’re looking forward to joining the Nottinghamshire community. We’re particularly excited to be bringing an on-site roaster to the café, which will be roasting all the coffee served, in front of our guests.”

The commercial units have been designed to accommodate a wide range of uses, with frontages to the completed pedestrian thoroughfare from the town centre to Asda, and to the rear onto the busy Lombard Street. The units are strategically located at one of Newark’s most prominent junctions.

Don’t forget, free weekend parking will be provided in District Council-owned car parks in Newark from Sunday, 24 November, coinciding with the Christmas Lights Switch-On, running through to Sunday, 29 December.

The District Council-managed car parks offering free parking include those located on Appleton Gate, London Road, The Wharf, Riverside, Riverside Arena, and Castle House. The offer does not apply to resident and contract car parks.
