The sculpture, a 2.79-metre-tall grey stone structure, has been a notable feature in Beeston Square, historically serving as a water feature.
However, with the growing need to accommodate more events and market stalls within the square, the council has been askedt approved its move to a landscaped area just outside the Arc Cinema.
This relocation is expected to free up considerable space within the square, allowing for a broader range of community activities and events.
The surrounding area includes a car park to the southeast, ensuring that the sculpture remains accessible and visible to the public. The relocation also adheres to policies outlined in the Broxtowe Aligned Core Strategy 2014 and the Part 2 Local Plan 2019, which emphasise the importance of maintaining the visual amenity of public spaces while supporting the role of town centres.
The sculpture itself, measuring 98cm at its base and 65cm at the top, will no longer function as a water feature in its new location. However, the potential for it to regain this function in the future has not been ruled out, depending on feasibility assessments. The base that currently supports the sculpture in Beeston Square will be demolished, further contributing to the square’s increased flexibility.
Financially, the relocation comes at no additional cost to the council, with the entire process being managed within existing budgets. The project has also been carefully reviewed to ensure compliance with legal and data protection regulations, maintaining transparency throughout the planning process.
