Bomb disposal teams called after discovery of a device in Rushcliffe

A suspected smoke bomb piece has been safely removed after being discovered on a construction site.

Officers from Nottinghamshire Police were called to a field between Clifton and Gotham and put cordons in place after workers unearthed suspected ammunition at around 10.30am today (Thursday 1 April).

The Army bomb disposal unit attended, examined the device and made it safe before it could be removed.

Chief Inspector Rob Shields from Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The item, which had the appearance of an artillery shell, is suspected to be a part of an old military smoke device and will have been buried for some years.”

“Fortunately the device was found in a remote location which allowed it to be made safe without any disruption to the local community.
