Yesterday (Sunday 23 March) Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer (CFO), Craig Parkin DL, met with family members of a wartime hero.
The meeting, which took place at Mansfield Fire Museum, which is a part of Mansfield Fire Station, was to mark a special moment for the Bennett family.
David Bennett, 88, and two of his granddaughters showcased an Elizabeth Emblem, which was awarded to David in recognition of his father, Frank Bennett – a heroic wartime firefighter – for his service and ultimate sacrifice.
Frank Bennett served during World War II and tragically lost his life in 1949 whilst on the line of duty. The Elizabeth Emblem was awarded to his son David by His Royal Highness King Charles III in December 2024, acknowledging the loss of Frank during his service.
Frank’s career began in the 1930’s with the Nottingham Police Fire Brigade, and he continued his service when fire brigades were incorporated into the National Fire Service. In 1941, Frank was severely injured during an air raid on Nottingham, then eight years later he tragically fell to his death whilst in attendance at an incident.
The Bennett family’s meeting with the CFO not only honoured Frank’s legacy but also symbolised the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by those who serve in the emergency services.
CFO Craig Parkin DL said: “It was a privilege to meet with David and his family this weekend to honour the memory of his father, Frank Bennett.
“His courageous service during World War II and his ultimate sacrifice are a reminder of the bravery and dedication that runs through our fire service today, all of these years later. As we remember Frank, we also need to reflect on the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices of all those who serve our communities, past and present.”
Frank Bennett’s son, David, said: “What an amazing place to visit – it was so interesting to see a history of firefighting under one roof. Thank you for having me!”
Jane Bennett, Frank’s granddaughter, spoke about her visit to Windsor Castle to receive the Elizabeth Emblem. She said: “It was such an honour to attend the ceremony – not only was it an amazing experience, but I had a conversation with HRH King Charles and had a look around Windsor Castle. It was the third Elizabeth Emblem to be presented by the King to the family of 35 presented on the day.”
