Council appoints new Lord Mayor and Sheriff of Nottingham

Councillor Cheryl Barnard, who represents Bulwell Forest, has been appointed Lord Mayor of Nottingham, while Councillor Audrey Dinnall, who represents Leen Valley, has been appointed Sheriff of Nottingham.

The appointments were made as part of the city council’s annual civic arrangements for the year ahead.

The Lord Mayor is Nottingham’s first citizen and represents the city at civic, ceremonial and community events. The role is separate from the political leadership of the council and is traditionally held for one civic year.

Councillor Barnard will now carry out duties including attending civic occasions, welcoming visitors to the city and representing Nottingham at events across the year.

Councillor Dinnall takes on one of Nottingham’s most distinctive historic titles. The Sheriff of Nottingham is now an ambassadorial civic role, promoting the city and county, and is separate from the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire.

The title remains closely associated with Nottingham’s history and the Robin Hood legend, but in modern civic life the Sheriff supports the city’s ceremonial calendar and represents Nottingham at events locally and further afield.

The appointments come as the council also confirms its wider committee and civic arrangements for 2026/27.
