As Broxtowe Borough Council continues to lead the way nationally on the High Street Rental Auctions (HSRA) initiative, the Council is now welcoming viewings and applications for lease rights for a minimum of five years at 1–3 Nottingham Road, Stapleford, formerly The Old Rock.
The premises are undergoing a full refurbishment to bring the property up to a minimum lettable standard, including new electrics, plumbing and toilets, replastering and repainting, new windows, as well as having the exterior rendering redone, thanks to a grant from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
Applications are now open for businesses, community organisations and other potential occupiers to make a bid for lease rights for a minimum of five years. Applicants can offer imaginative new uses for the building, and there may be additional financial incentives for outstanding businesses wanting to establish themselves in Stapleford.
Applicants are encouraged to view the property before submitting an application. Viewings are available on request by emailing finlay.lowe@broxtowe.gov.uk.
Applications close on Wednesday 19 August 2026. Find more information and details of how to apply online on our 1–3 Nottingham Road HSRA webpage.
Broxtowe continues to lead the way nationally on High Street Rental Auctions, having been one of only eleven councils on the Government’s HSRA early adopter programme, and the first to serve an HSRA notice in Stapleford.
Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Asset Management, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, said, “High Street Rental Auctions have given councils powers to rejuvenate our high streets that we’ve never had before, and it’s imperative that we take the initiative and begin to make use of these powers right away to support local businesses and increase footfall in our town centres.
“The Old Rock has long been vacant and had become a bit of a burden on Stapleford, especially with the premises being in such a prominent position in the town. I’m extremely pleased that we’ve been able to move forward so quickly with the HSRA process for this property, and now we can look forward to the premises becoming a thriving hub in the town centre, which I’m sure many residents will be looking forward to.”
High Street Rental Auctions (HSRAs) are a new permissive power for local authorities, granted by MHCLG, to require landlords to rent out persistently vacant commercial properties to new tenants, such as local businesses or community groups, which Broxtowe Borough Council is currently undertaking in Stapleford and Eastwood. Local authorities will be able to take action to fill long-term vacant properties by auctioning lease rights for up to five years.
