Dangerous driver who killed motorist in Nottingham jailed

A dangerous driver reached speeds of more than 80mph before killing another motorist who was waiting in traffic.

Rowan Grant was travelling at nearly three times the speed limit shortly before he crashed into the back of another car.

The driver of that car, 36-year-old Andrew Lister, sustained serious injuries and later died in hospital.

Mr Lister’s partner also suffered life-altering injuries in the collision on Nuthall Road, Nottingham, on 9 December 2025.

As emergency services arrived at the scene near the junction with Western Boulevard, Grant, who had been taking cannabis, falsely claimed the car had been driven by his girlfriend.

She was in fact many miles away at the time, and Grant had taken her car without consent.

Grant, a disqualified driver with a previous conviction for dangerous driving, was later arrested.

While still in hospital five days after the crash, he was aggressive and abusive towards officers who had arrived to take him into custody.

During a police interview later the same day, Grant gave mostly “no comment” answers.

He later claimed he had suffered an epileptic seizure behind the wheel, although police said he had carried out several overtaking manoeuvres before the crash and had not mentioned a seizure in the immediate aftermath.

Grant later pleaded guilty to:

  • Causing death by dangerous driving
  • Causing death by driving while disqualified
  • Causing death by driving while unlicensed and uninsured
  • Causing serious injury by dangerous driving

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court today (Tuesday), Grant, of no fixed address, was jailed for 10 years.

He was also banned from driving for life.

Case Investigator Sarah Butler, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:

“Grant was responsible that day for a scene of total devastation, with numerous vehicles sustaining catastrophic damage and coming to rest across the road.

“The victims in this case were simply waiting at a red light when their lives were shattered by a man who should never have been behind the wheel of a car in the first place.

“His dishonesty at the scene shows exactly the kind of person he is, as do his repeated decisions to take to the road as a disqualified driver.

“As Grant begins this jail sentence, my thoughts and those of my colleagues are with Andrew’s partner, his family and his loved ones, and all the people whose lives he has devastated.”
