Determined police officer seizes e-bike after foot and cycle chase

An e-bike has been seized and taken off the street after a fleeing man failed to outrun a determined police officer on a bicycle.

Two neighbourhood officers were patrolling on pedal cycles on the afternoon of 11 August when they came across two men riding e-bikes along a footpath near Main Street in Strelley.

They were hit with a strong smell of cannabis and one man immediately made off on spotting the officers.

The second man, aged 19, dropped his e-bike and attempted to run away on foot.

PC Mark McKay was quickly in pursuit on a bicycle, and it wasn’t long before he was on the tail of the runaway rider.

After initially losing sight of him, the fleeing teenager gave the officer the runabout in the street before heading towards a bridge crossing over the M1 motorway.

Putting pedal power to use, the officer quickly closed the gap, however, before tackling the teenager to the floor and detaining him for a search.

A small amount of cannabis and a balaclava were seized, alongside the Surron e-bike.

The 19-year-old man was later taken home to his mother by officers, where he was issued with a community resolution and ordered to complete a drugs rehabilitation course.

PC Mark McKay, of Nottinghamshire Police’s city west neighbourhood team, said: “We have seen reports of antisocial behaviour linked to off-road and illegal e-bikes, which cause a nuisance for residents.

“As a neighbourhood team, we are committed to taking proactive steps to remove these vehicles from our streets and keep our communities safe.

“While our response must always be proportionate, we will continue to act on information from the public and seize bikes being used unlawfully.

“This rider was determined to get away from us, but we were able to track him down and detain him quickly.

“All in all, we left the station with two bikes and returned with three, which is a good result for the team and community.”
