Broxtowe Borough Council has agreed to move forward with plans for a new health centre in Eastwood, with a smaller scheme expected if government funding cannot be secured.
The council’s cabinet gave the go-ahead on Tuesday 8 September to progress the project off Walker Street. The full £31 million proposal includes a GP surgery, pharmacy, larger library, swimming pool and community facilities.
A smaller scheme, costing at least £15 million, would provide a medical centre, replacement library and space that could be used by Eastwood Boxing Club.
Council leader Milan Radulovic (Brox Alliance) said the full development, including a pool and gym, would need support from the government or East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).
He said that requests for government funding had gone unanswered.
“We need to develop this facility. Eastwood’s doctors’ surgery is not fit for purpose,” he said.
“There’s only so long I can wait. People in Eastwood are suffering, they need a new medical facility desperately – they needed it 15 years ago.”
The council has pursued the project since 2022, when an unsuccessful government funding bid stalled the original plans. In April 2026, it announced plans to seek full government funding.
It has approached government departments responsible for housing and culture and remains in discussions with EMCCA.
Cllr Radulovic said Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board had proposed a “huge contribution” towards the project. No figure was provided.
Early proposals for the health centre include 26 GP consulting rooms, more than a dozen nursing stations, blood-testing services, a women’s health and wellbeing centre and cancer screening.
At an April cabinet meeting, Cllr Radulovic highlighted higher rates of cancer, type two diabetes, COPD, heart disease and stroke in Eastwood compared with the Nottinghamshire average.
An EMCCA spokesperson said projects were assessed against its strategic objectives, which Broxtowe’s leadership had helped develop.
“Regarding this project, we are in regular, ongoing dialogue with Broxtowe Borough Council. We will continue to engage with them on this and their other projects,” the spokesperson said.
The government was approached for comment but had not responded by the time of publication.
