Family burgled two weeks after moving to new home

A serial burglar has been jailed after he targeted a family just two weeks after they moved to a new home in Nottinghamshire.

Jonathon White broke into their new home and stole expensive items including a laptop, video cameras and jewellery.

The family moved their belongings into the rented property in Outram Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, on 1 September 2021 after moving from Luton.

They then went away and were planning on moving into the property a few weeks later.

But their hopes of a happy start in Nottinghamshire were cruelty shattered when White, of Raylawn Street, Mansfield, ransacked their new home sometime between September 16 and 18.

Forensic evidence linked White – who has a string of previous convictions for burglary – to the crime and the 39-year-old was swiftly arrested.

He appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (7 April 2022) and was jailed for two years and five months after pleading guilty to one count of burglary.

Following the sentencing, investigating officer PC Joel Hughes said: “Finding that your home has been broken into is one of the most upsetting experiences anyone can suffer, which is why we take it so seriously as a force.

“This case was particularly distressing as the family had only just moved in their belongings in and were looking forward to starting a new chapter in their lives.

“We were determined to catch the person responsible for turning that excitement into misery and crime scene investigators did a tremendous job in securing the evidence that put White before the courts.

“It is not the first time he has been convicted of burglary and theft and I am pleased that he is now serving time in jail.

“I hope he uses his time inside to reflect on the poor choices he has made, in order to make better ones when he is released.”
