Fire crews and police attended the incident on Tuesday 6 August.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Castle Donington Fire Station said:
‘Tonight we were called to a child sitting on a hay bale in the grand union canal.
‘The hay bale had moved to the middle of the canal due to the current of passing boats.
‘Crews using a reach pole and throw line were able to pull the youth to the bank side.

‘This incident posed a danger not only to the child who could not swim but also to boaters.
‘Three fire engines and police were mobilised to this incident.’
