‘Fireballs and blasts’ in Clifton after car explodes and house set alight

Police believe two cars were deliberately set on fire and the blaze spread to a nearby house due to the amount of fuel involved.

Residents described fireballs and blasts coming from the vehicles in Meadowvale Crescent,  Clifton, before police witnessed one of the cars exploding shortly after midnight last night.

No one was injured but the vehicles were completely destroyed and there was minor damage to a nearby property.

Neighbourhood Inspector Karl Thomas, said: “It’s incredibly dangerous to set something on fire and, as we saw in this incident, the blaze quickly spread to a house with occupants inside.

“Thankfully our fire colleagues were quickly on scene to extinguish and there were no injuries.

“We are carrying out extensive enquiries and checking through nearby CCTV. We urge anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area around the time, or who has any information that could assist our investigation, to get in touch with us.

“Local officers will be increasing their presence over the coming days and residents are encouraged to talk them if they have any concerns at all.

“We believe this was a targeted attack and there is no threat to the wider pubic.”
