A former TSB bank in Newark town centre can now be turned into new apartments after approval by the council.
Property developer Kirby Homes applied to Newark and Sherwood District Council back in November 2025 to turn the former TSB bank in the town’s Castle Gate into four apartments.
The authority has now given the go-ahead for a one-bed apartment and three two-bedroom apartments.
TSB’s Newark branch closed in May 2023 after a review into its customer use found a high reliance on digital banking and was later marketed to rent by estate agent Wood Moore and Co.
The vacant former bank is a mid-20th century “traditional” building that reflects the character of the road, where its footprint will stay the same and the existing front windows and doors will be kept to “match the existing style and colour”, according to plans.
Apart from removing the external staircase, no changes will be made to the building’s external fabric to maintain its character in line with Castle Gate Street and the Newark Conservation Area.
The homes will add to the council’s need for new housing, where planning documents say the authority is “unable to demonstrate a five-year housing land supply”.
No parking has been factored into the plans but this was considered acceptable given the site’s location in the town centre, existing parking controls and readily available public transport.
The new apartments will be a short walk from the historic Newark Castle and its gardens, where a project is currently ongoing to transform the castle’s gatehouse.
The £6.7 million project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the government and the district council is aiming to improve the visitor attraction and enhance the castle’s gardens.
