A four-foot boa constrictor was rescued from a car engine bay in Sherwood after police used a coat hanger taped to a baton to retrieve it.
Officers attended an address on Friday 11 September after a resident spotted the snake moving down a driveway and underneath a parked car.
They opened the bonnet and found the animal hiding in the engine bay.
PC Dan Howard and Sergeant Joanna Stanbridge made a makeshift snake hook by taping a wire coat hanger to the end of a police baton.
They used it to carefully coax the snake from its hiding place before securing it in a bag normally used to carry a stab vest.
The boa constrictor was taken to a local veterinary practice for safekeeping while efforts were made to find its owner.
Chief Inspector Paul Hennessy, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This incident showcased perfectly the variety of different situations our officers can find themselves in when they start a shift.”
He added: “Their actions ultimately resulted in the 4ft-long boa constrictor being safely retrieved from the car engine without coming to any harm, which was good to see.”
