An inquest which took place yesterday (Monday 23 February) examined the tragic death of Mr Darius Labunskas, aged 54, who died following a fire inside his lorry cab in July 2025.
Firefighters from Stockhill, Hucknall and Arnold fire stations were mobilised at 11:04pm on the 26 July 2025 after a call to Joint Fire Control reported that a person was on fire at Watnall Road Aerodrome. Mr Labunskas was transported to the Queens Medical Centre where sadly he died the following morning.
A subsequent fire investigation determined that the fire originated from a three‑kilogram LPG gas cylinder being used for cooking inside the enclosed lorry cab.
Assistant Coroner Nathanael Hartley concluded that Mr Labunskas died as a result of severe burns.
Fire Investigation and Arson Reduction Officer Beth Pearson said: “On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to all who knew Mr Labunskas.”
Head of Community Safety and Engagement Richard Leighton added: “This tragic incident highlights the dangers of using portable cooking devices in enclosed spaces. These devices should only be used in well‑ventilated, appropriate outdoor areas. It is essential to check that equipment is in good condition before use, to never leave it unattended while operating, and to ensure it is cleaned and safely shut down afterwards.”
