Junction improvement works to benefit pedestrians and cyclists in Lady Bay

The improvements will help to make walking and cycling in the local area safer once the new bridge opens by March 2026.

Junction improvements in Lady Bay have been approved ahead of the construction of the new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Trent.

The works, which will see improvements at the junction of Radcliffe Road and Trent Boulevard, the junction of Radcliffe Road, Mabel Grove and Rutland Road and the junction of Radcliffe Road, Cyril Road and Rutland Road, will be funded by Nottingham City Council’s allocation from the Transforming Cities Fund and commissioned by Nottinghamshire County Council.

The improvements will help to make walking and cycling in the local area safer once the new bridge opens by March 2026.

At the junction of Radcliffe Road and Trent Boulevard, the pedestrian refuge will be widened, and some areas of the crossing will be resurfaced and widened to provide more capacity at peak times.

The existing toucan crossing at the junction of Radcliffe Road, Mabel Grove and Rutland Road will be upgraded and new shared footways will be added. Realignments of both the Mabel Grove and Rutland Road junctions will take place to slow vehicles down and deter them from overtaking cyclists close to the junctions.

Double yellow lines along Mable Grove and Rutland Road will be extended to give extra visibility at the junctions and reduce congestion.

At the junction of Radcliffe Road, Cyril Road and Rutland Road, the existing toucan crossing will be upgraded to a sparrow crossing – meaning that a new segregated parallel pedestrian and cyclist crossing area will be created to provide extra space.

A new, segregated cycleway will also be created alongside the path connecting to Cyril Road and the existing path connecting to Rutland Road will be resurfaced.

Other improvements include widening part of the existing path on Radcliffe Road close to the existing toucan crossing at Cyril Road and Rutland Road to give more space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Consultation with local residents and businesses will take place ahead of any works starting on improvements at Radcliffe Road, Mabel Grove and Rutland Road and Radcliffe Road, Cyril Road and Rutland Road and works on the schemes are set to be completed by March 2026.

Additionally, Nottingham City Council will begin upgrades to the footpath running between the river and Lady Bay play park off Holme Road this week, replacing the stoney path with a three-metre tarmac path. These enhancements are part of the bridge development works aimed at improving connectivity and preparing the construction access for the new bridge.

Councillor Neil Clarke MBE, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This is great news for pedestrians and cyclists who will use the new bridge over the River Trent.

“We are making these improvements to make walking and cycling safer for when the bridge opens next year.

“These junctions have been chosen because of their location on the route that pedestrians and cyclists would take from the bridge to West Bridgford town centre.

“We will bring further updates to local residents and businesses as the scheme develops.”
