Keyworth Turkey Trot half-marathon returns for 2024 – how to take part

This year’s ever-popular Turkey Trot half marathon takes place on Sunday, 8 December 2024, and entries are still open for the last few wanting to take part in this super-friendly, local half marathon event.

Turkey trotting is the 100+ year-old tradition of planning a run before Christmas, seen as a great way to prepare for the indulgences of the festive season. Lore has it that the tradition started in New York in 1896 by the YMCA, with only six runners taking part, and just four finishing!

In contrast, the Keyworth Turkey Trot is one of Rushcliffe’s biggest annual community sporting events, with up to a thousand runners. It is organised by the 1st Keyworth Scout Group – a far more capable group!

Those brave enough to take part will enjoy a 13.1-mile half marathon course that winds its way through the beautiful countryside of the South Nottinghamshire Wolds, passing through the villages of Wysall, Willoughby-on-the-Wolds, and Widmerpool, before heading back to Keyworth.

The route is described as both challenging and rewarding! But fear not, there are three drink stations and lots of friendly organisers and supporters along the way. Better still, the revamped school kitchen at South Wolds School means hot food for those who need it, or just want it.

For the fastest amongst us, there are winners’ and runners-up trophies, along with a Derby Runner voucher. There are also team prizes and special trophies for the first male and female runners from the local villages.

The 1st Keyworth Scout Group welcomes all runners, helpers, and supporters. They would love to hear from anyone who wants to get involved in the pre-Christmas spirit of this great local event. You can help as a race marshal or as a general volunteer by contacting info@turkeytrot.org.uk.

If nothing else, it would be great for lots of locals to get outside and cheer on the hardy runners.
