Abbas Hussain has been elected as the councillor for the Leen Valley ward following yesterday’s Nottingham City Council by-election.
The full result is as follows:
Abbas Hussain (Labour Party) – 689 votes
Parveen Begum (Nottingham People’s Alliance) – 523
Stuart Frost (Reform UK) – 410
Hugh McGuiness (Green Party) – 378
Gail Stancliffe (Conservative Party) – 189
Liz Morgan-Danvers (Liberal Democrats) – 68
Turnout in the by-election was 31.82%
The result means the political make-up of Nottingham City Council is now:
Labour Group – 44 councillors
Nottingham People’s Alliance Group – 6 councillors
Nottingham Independents and Independent Group – 4 councillors
There is 1 councillor who is not a member of a political group.
Labour’s Abbas Hussain has been elected to Nottingham City Council, strengthening the party’s grip in the city despite troubles over its response to the Israel’s military action in Gaza.
A by-election was held in the Leen Valley ward after Nadia Farhat, a former Labour councillor, was removed for failing to attend enough meetings.
Ms Farhat was first elected to the ward in 2023.
She defected to stand independently just months later in October 2023 over former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s stance on the conflict in Gaza.
Voting took place on Thursday (August 20), and the result was declared just after midnight on Friday (August 21) from Loxley House.
Mr Hussain said the result shows residents in his ward “placed their trust in the Labour Party once again”, but acknowledged there were “ups and downs and issues we had to face within this campaign”.
“But the residents of Leen Valley placed their trust in the Labour Party because they know it is the party that unites all communities, regardless of background, ethnicity or where they come from,” he said.
