Live updates: A46 Saxondale closed – serious multi-vehicle collision

The A46 in Nottinghamshire is closed both ways ( since 5 pm ) between the A52 (Saxondale) and B6166 (Newark-on-Trent) following a serious collision.

Friday – The road fully reopened at 12:52 am this morning Friday 13 December.

Clear up work complete on the A46 northbound A52 (Saxondale) and B6166 (Newark on Trent).

The road remains closed for emergency resurfacing due to damage caused by a substantial spillage from the collision.

National Highways | 8:36 pm

Specialist contractors have cleared the spillages and debris from the A46
southbound between the A52 (Saxondale) and B6166 (Newark on Trent) and has now been REOPENED.

The northbound carriageway remains closed for ongoing recovery and clean-up work at the scene.

New diversions 𝌐

The A46 in Nottinghamshire is closed in both directions between the A52 (Saxondale) and B6166 (Newark-on-Trent) following a road traffic collision.

Nottinghamshire Police are working at the scene of a serious road traffic collision with National Highways service providers en route to assist with traffic management.

Diversion Routes

Northbound road users are advised to follow the below diversion route which is not symbol led.

At the A46 Saxondale roundabout take the A52 east.

Follow the A52 until you reach the A1 north.

Follow the A1 north until you reach the A46 Brownhills junction.

Exit the A1 and rejoin the A46 north.

Southbound road users are advised to follow the below diversion route which is not symbol led.

At the A46/A1 roundabout take the exit onto the A1 south at Newark junction and follow for approximately 24km.

Exit at the junction for Barrowby and take the A52 west for approximately 21km to rejoin the A46 at the Bingham Interchange

Both directions of the A46 are now closed between the A6097 (East Bridgford) and B6166 (Kneeton).

Nottinghamshire Police continue to work at scene with National Highways service providers en route to assist.

‘Update | 14:00 | We have now left the scene but the A46 northbound will remain closed for several hours.’

Diversion Route

Road users are advised to follow the below diversion route which is not symbol led.

  • At the A46 Saxondale roundabout take the A52 east.
  • Follow the A52 until you reach the A1 north.
  • Follow the A1 north until you reach the A46 Brownhills junction.
  • Exit the A1 and rejoin the A46 north.

 

Nottinghamshire Police | 1:45 pm

Road closures are currently in place following a serious collision on the A46.

The incident happened on the northbound carriageway of the A-road near East Bridgford Garden Centre.

Multiple vehicles were involved in the collision, which took place around 11.35am today (12 December).

One person involved in the incident sustained injuries that are currently believed to be life-threatening.

Closures on the A46 have been put in place between the A52 Saxondale Island northbound and the A46 southbound from Newark.

Signposted diversions have been put in place to send motorists around the A1 instead.

Drivers are advised to avoid this area, with closures predicted to remain in place for some time.

HGV drivers in particular are asked to use alternative routes, so as to avoid causing significant traffic disruption.

Chief Inspector Dean Gallacher, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Emergency services will remain at the scene for some time while we investigate this collision.

“I’d like to thank people for their patience as we continue to respond to this ongoing incident.

“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 259 of 12 December 2024.”


AA Roadwatch | 1 pm

Road closed and queueing traffic due to crash on the A46 both ways between A6097 and the Kneeton turn off. The road remains closed both ways. There are reports that Southbound is now open however the sensors show that Southbound is still closed.
