National Highways say the incident led by police is ongoing.
The motorway has been closed at J22 Leicestershire since the early hours of Thursday 18 January.
National Highways said in an update at 9:45 am:
‘The M1 southbound remains closed between J22 and J21A near #Leicester for a
Leicestershire Police-led incident.
‘The road is expected to remain closed throughout most of the day.
‘There are delays of 40 min above normal travel time with 3 miles of congestion.’
Leicestershire Police currently lead the response to an incident which was first reported to National Highways at 5am.
The road is closed for Police investigations and is likely to be closed for several hours.
National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management.
