Major traffic disruption expected as A52 part-closes near QMC for 12 weeks

Major gas works begin on Monday 9 January – public transport will be affected and disruption is expected.

Cadent Gas is upgrading pre-World War II gas pipes under Derby Road from Monday 9 January, resulting in a complete closure of the A52 westbound lane (leaving the city) between the QMC and Priory Island.

The closure is 24 hours seven days a week and for approximately 12 weeks.

The eastbound lane (heading towards the city) will remain open.

A signed diversion will take drivers along the A6005 (University Boulevard) and Woodside Road before rejoining the A52 at Priory Island. Please avoid travelling by car if you can – and allow extra time for journeys.

trentbarton bus services i4 and Red Arrow will be affected, with delays expected to Skylink and Indigo services using University Boulevard.

Other bus services including Medilink may be affected by extra traffic on nearby roads.

Cadent Gas are replacing 2,000 metres of gas pipes under part of Derby Road, which runs between the QMC and Priory roundabouts.

This work starts on Monday 9th January 2023 and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete, with diversions in place throughout on Orange 34C within University Park Campus, Orange 35 buses towards Bulwell and Orange 36 buses towards Beeston and Chilwell.

If you are travelling to the QMC, we will continue to pick up and drop off at the same stops we normally do.

The closure of Derby Road in one direction will place pressure on surrounding roads as people find alternative ways to make their journeys. We anticipate delays to Pink 28, 30; Orange 34, 35, 36 and Grey 53, 54 buses during these works.

The University of Nottingham is stopping access through University Park during these works for most of the day.

N34 will be able to operate its normal route overnight via Beeston Lane, but the 34C will not be able to operate around the campus loop during these works. All 34C buses will operate as a 34 terminating on East Drive.

Buses towards the City will follow their normal route. Stops on Derby Road between Priory roundabout and University North Entrance may be relocated.

Buses towards Wollaton Vale, Bilborough and Bulwell will follow their normal route to serve the stop outside QMC. They will then divert along left Clifton Boulevard to Dunkirk, right Beeston Road, continuing the full length of University Boulevard to the roundabout outside University West Entrance, then continuing along Woodside Road to resume normal route along Wollaton Vale.

All stops on the diversion route will be served.

If you normally travel from the City to Woodside Road, you will need to use the diverted Orange 35, which will drop off at stops along Woodside Road.

During these works, it is not possible to catch a bus from Woodside Road towards Beeston or Chilwell and the nearest alternative stop will near the Co-op at University West Entrance (same side of the road as the Co-op) or on Broadgate.

The University of Nottingham are stopping access through University Park during these works, so it will not be possible for the 36U to serve University Park. If you are heading to University Park, please use Orange 34 only.
