Man charged after police operation tackling shoplifting

A man has been charged with multiple offences after uniformed and plain-clothes officers joined forces during a positive day of action targeting shop theft in Arnold town centre.

The focused operation followed recent reports from Boots regarding an individual who had stolen around £1,500 worth of products over a two-day period.

Patrolling officers arrested a suspect on suspicion of theft and possession of the Class B drug Mamba during their targeted activity on Thursday 17 September.

Guy Donegan, aged 44, of Raithby Close, Bestwood, was subsequently charged with three counts of theft and possession of a Class B drug.

He was released on bail and is now subject to strict conditions, including not entering any Boots store in Nottingham or the Boyes store in Front Street, Arnold.

He is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 16 October.

Inspector Steven King, local area commander for Gedling, said: “Tackling and reducing acquisitive crime, including shop theft, is a priority for our team due to the harmful and lasting impact these types of crimes have on our communities.

“Our officers had lots of positive interactions with members of the public during our recent day of action, also receiving good feedback from stores in Arnold.

“Our officers will look to deal robustly with any offenders, ensuring they are quickly brought to justice, and will continue to utilise criminal behaviour orders (CBOs) for the most prolific offenders.

“These orders can include conditions such as banning offenders from carrying bags for life, banning them from certain areas, as well as positive conditions such as seeking rehabilitative treatment to reduce their risk of offending.

“Breach of a CBO is an arrestable offence and will see the offender put back before the magistrates’ court.

“We also continue to collaborate with partner agencies and businesses to look at all available options to deal with offenders, assist with target hardening and problem-solving, and encourage retailers to report shoplifting incidents through streamlined mechanisms.

“This helps provide us with a better understanding of crime trends, enabling us to adequately target repeat offenders, prolific offenders and hotspot locations.”

He added: “We have launched a dedicated operation (Operation Shifted) as part of our ongoing efforts to crack down on shop theft in Gedling Central, covering the Arnold, Daybrook and Bonington beat areas.

“The top five priority locations and repeat offenders have been identified, and proactive work is already underway to address these issues.

“We have also introduced business action groups across Gedling.

“These groups bring together local businesses and policing teams to strengthen problem-solving partnerships, prevent crime, and ensure offenders are brought to justice swiftly.”
