Man jailed after brandishing an air gun in Clifton town centre

Clifton – A man has been sentenced to prison after wielding an air gun in a town centre.

Police were called to Southchurch Drive, Clifton, following reports that 49-year-old Lee McCarthy was spotted in possession of a BB gun.

Officers worked quickly on Saturday 14 September 2024 to track down McCarthy and arrest him.

McCarthy, of Varney Road, Clifton, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday 7 March and was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment following charges of affray and possession of a loaded air weapon in a public place.

The defendant was also ordered to hand over his gun and any ammunition.

Detective Constable Juliana Gourlay, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Investigation department, said:

“Anyone who takes the decision to carry an air weapon is putting themselves and anyone they encounter at a greater risk of harm.

“Weapons of this nature can cause significant injury, alarm and distress to members of the public.

“I hope people are at least reassured by our quick and efficient response which has seen the defendant locked away.”
