Man sentenced after snatching woman’s purse at ASDA

A man who snatched a woman’s purse after she withdrew £250 at a Nottingham cash machine has been sentenced.

Kobie Cashin targeted the 63-year-old shopper as she used an ATM outside Asda in Hyson Green.

Having forcibly snatched the purse, he ran off leaving the victim feeling anxious and distressed.

Nottingham Crown Court heard the purse contained £250 in cash, which the shopper had just withdrawn so she could buy a birthday present for her granddaughter.

Police examined CCTV and identified the suspect. They later found the purse during a search of his accommodation – but all the money had gone.

Cashin, aged 25, of Bakersfield, was arrested and taken into custody where he denied any involvement.

However, faced with overwhelming evidence, he went on to plead guilty to theft in relation to the incident, which happened around 12.30pm on 5 August last year.

Cashin also admitted burglary after £344 worth of items were stolen from Molton Brown in St Peter’s Gate, Nottingham city centre, in the early hours of 16 November. A window was smashed and he was arrested shortly afterwards after police went searching for those responsible for the break-in.

He further admitted a second count of theft after stealing £61.70 worth of goods from Tesco in Long Row, Nottingham city centre, on 16 October 2023.

He appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday, 25 April and sentenced to a community order, in which he must undergo 12 months of mental health treatment as an outpatient and complete 10 rehabilitation activity days.

Detective Constable Tim Townsend, who led the investigation, said:

“These were unacceptable offences and I’m pleased Cashin has been dealt with by the courts.

“The cash machine offence was a particularly nasty crime that caused a great deal of distress to the victim.

“It knocked her confidence and she is now afraid to use cash machines unless accompanied.

“I commend her bravery in helping us bring the case to court and hope it brings her some comfort now Cashin has been sentenced.

“I’d like to reassure people that Nottinghamshire Police takes all reports of theft and  burglary very seriously. We will investigate and do everything in our power to put offenders like Cashin before the courts.”
