Officers were flagged down by members of the public on October 25 after a man, in his 20s, was seen in considerable pain.
He told officers that following an altercation with a group of men at Forest Recreation Ground he was attacked and had his ear bitten off.
He was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre by officers and had to undergo surgery due to the extent of the injuries.
Officers arrested two men in connection with the incident and have conducted a number of lines of inquiry since the incident occurred.
This has included witness statements, an extensive CCTV trawl as well as forensic work on the victim’s clothing.

They have now released an image of a man that could help further their inquiries and are calling on the public’s help to identify him.
Detective Constable Gavin Harper, who is investigating the incident, said:
“This was a violent and appalling attack which left the victim seeking immediate medical intervention at Queen’s Medical Centre.
“Luckily the victim is recovering from this attack but has been left with life-altering injuries as a result.
“This is why it is vital that we ensure those responsible are put before the courts.
“We are releasing an image of a man that could help us with our inquiries but so far have not been able to identify him.
“We are calling on the public’s help. While we understand the picture quality is not of the highest standard we are hoping that someone will know him.
“Do you know the man in the image? Are you the man in the image? Anyone with information please get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
