A new supported housing service has been unveiled in Nottingham, in tribute to a local social housing pioneer, Andrew Malone.
Part of a new development in Clifton, Nottingham, the supported living service, ‘Malone Terrace’ will offer 14 self-contained flats for people in need of mental health support who are also at risk of homelessness.
It will provide short-term accommodation with additional support. Specialist support workers will work with residents to help them learn essential life skills and help them move on to more permanent, independent living.
The service, commissioned by Nottingham City Council, has been designed, built and will be managed by Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA). The scheme is named in honour of their founding Chief Executive.
Andrew Malone created NCHA back in 1973, in response to high levels of homelessness. The organisation has since grown to more than 10,000 homes, and Andrew was especially proud when the association began to deliver social care in the 1980s.
Members of Andrew’s family joined NCHA and councillors from Nottingham City Council to officially open the service and unveil a memorial plaque. Diana Malone, Andrew’s widow was delighted to see the scheme: “It’s brilliant. He would be amazed; he’d be really pleased.”
Paul Moat, Chief Executive commented: “It’s a tremendous honour to welcome Andrew’s wife and family to this site. Andrew was immensely proud of the work of NCHA, especially the care and support we offer, so it’s fitting that we’re honouring his memory in this way.”
Sitting on the newly created Fairham Brook Drive the two-storey building will offer fully furnished flats, with a social space and communal courtyard.
Built on a gas-free site, the homes have been built to energy rating ‘B’. Heating and hot water will be provided by air source heat pumps, and solar-generated power will deliver electricity. Green, living roofs, vehicle charging points and thick layers of insulations ensure these homes will be warm and comfortable, with minimal environmental impact.
Malone Terrace forms part of a larger NCHA development off Farnborough Road in Clifton that’s been designed by NCHA’s in-house architects, Pelham and built by Geda Construction. This £3.7 million initiative was made possible through a collaborative funding effort between NCHA and Homes England, which aligns with NCHA’s Strategic Partnership, aimed at delivering affordable housing across the East Midlands.
The former Nottingham College site is being transformed into NCHA’s new offices, supported living and 56 independent living flats and bungalows for people over the age of 55, with the existing football and army cadet facilities remaining. Once complete in the coming weeks, it’ll be a fantastic new space for the local community to live, work and play.
