Nine caught with drugs in Nottingham city centre operation

Nottingham city centre – A police sniffer dog helped officers make multiple arrests and seize a significant haul of drugs.

Nine people were found in possession of drugs in Nottingham city centre, with one of them also caught with a knife.

A number of Operation Guardian officers patrolled the streets of the city, aided by a passive drugs dog, and carried out stop and search activity, as well as engaging with people enjoying a night out.

Operation Guardian is a long-running initiative and has been highly successful in tackling drugs and reducing violence in the city centre in recent years.

The latest operation took place on Friday (27 October) and yielded a number of good results.

A 16-year-old boy was searched in Greyhound Street and found to be in possession of a knife, a small amount of powder suspected to be MDMA and a quantity of cannabis. He was swiftly dealt with in custody and charged after interview underlying Nottinghamshire Police’s zero tolerance approach towards knife crime.

Another boy the same age was searched in Upper Parliament Street and found to be carrying a small bag of cannabis.

A 19-year-old man was caught with ketamine in Long Row and a 27-year-old man was found with cannabises in Forman Street.

Elsewhere, a 39-year-old man was caught with cannabis in Clumber Street, with a 26-year-old man caught with the same drug outside The Cornerhouse.

Meanwhile, three teenagers were found with drugs in Old Market Square. They included an 18-year-old man who was found to be hiding a small quantity of ketamine, as well as a 16-year-old girl and 19-year-old man both caught with cannabis.

All the suspects were searched because they were either seen to be taking drugs, were sniffed out by the drugs dog or were seen to be trying to avoid the Op Guardian team. They are now either facing court proceedings or community resolutions.

Sergeant Ethan Spinks, who led the operation, said:

“We continue to take a zero tolerance approach to drugs and knife crime.

“As a result of the proactive efforts of the Operation Guardian team, a significant quantity of drugs were seized and a potentially deadly weapon was also taken out of circulation.

“Drugs fuel crime and violence and we will continue to take action against those who blight local communities with their criminality.

“Weapons also have no place on our streets and we are working every day to clamp down on those who ignore out repeated warnings about the potential consequences of knife crime.”
