Nine-minute police pursuit ends with suspect hiding under car

Road crime officers arrested a dangerous drive suspect following a car and foot chase.

Officers from the Road Crime Team were on patrol in Sutton-in-Ashfield when they spotted a silver MG.

Hearing the car had been reported stolen, the team got behind it and made attempts to pull it over, in Eastfield Side.

When the driver instead accelerated away, a pursuit began around Sutton-in-Ashfield, just after 12.50am on Thursday (13 August), which lasted for nine minutes.

During this time, the MG was driven at speed through residential streets, on the wrong side of the road, the wrong way around a roundabout, through multiple red lights and off-road into an industrial estate.

The vehicle pursuit ended when the car headed towards a dead end in Short Street, with the driver colliding with a parked car before getting out and making a run for it.

Having got out to chase the suspect on foot, the officers conducted a search of the area, which ended when they discovered someone hiding under another parked car who matched the description of the driver.

The 33-year-old was duly arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop and driving while disqualified.

Sergeant Charlotte Brooks, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“As viewers of the police footage can see for themselves, the driving demonstrated in this incident was incredibly dangerous.

“Thankfully for everybody involved, nobody was injured during this pursuit around the streets of Sutton-in-Ashfield, which lasted for nine minutes in total.

“That was solely down to the superior skills and decision-making of the Road Crime team officers behind, who kept a safe distance while tailing the driver all the way.

“As a direct result of their actions, we were able to successfully track down a suspect and arrest him, which was a very pleasing result.”
