Nottingham e-scooter journeys trebled in January – free safety sessions this week

Superpedestrian shared e-scooters began rolling out in Nottingham just before Christmas last year, in a move designed to improve pedestrian safety and rider comfort.

In January 2022, the first full calendar month for which data with the new e-scooters is available, figures from the shared e-scooter programme prove that Nottingham’s residents are big fans of the new vehicle.

In January 2021, Nottingham residents made an average of 720 daily journeys on shared e-scooters.

In January 2022, the number of daily journeys had jumped to 2,100 – a threefold increase!

Every vehicle is making 60% more daily trips (even when an increased fleet size is factored in), a key operational metric used to understand the performance of a shared mobility programme.

“With more than one million journeys in its first 12 months, and high continuing usage, the Nottingham shared e-scooter programme is the most popular service in the UK,” comments Jean Andrews, Policy Director (UKI) at Superpedestrian.

“The fact that usage is increasing clearly shows that Nottingham residents love the new Superpedestrian scooter, and that early high levels of use weren’t due to novelty factor. We’re proud that our new vehicle is supporting even more people in Nottingham in their daily lives.”

Avoiding 27,500 miles of short car journeys in one month

Nottingham residents used the new Superpedestrian shared e-scooters to cover a total distance of 91,745 miles in January alone, which is more than 11 trips around the Earth.

“Our own customer survey data shows that our riders use our shared services to directly replace car journeys on 30% of all trips,” says Haya Verwoord Douidri, VP (Global market expansion, policy and strategy) at Superpedestrian and the architect behind the arrangement to bring the company’s scooters to the city. “This means that, in January alone, our shared e-scooter avoided more than 27,500 miles of short car journeys in Nottingham, bringing benefits in improved air quality and reduced congestion to all residents.”

Free safety and skills training for all

On Thursday, Superpedestrian will be holding free-to-attend drop-in sessions for Nottingham residents. The sessions are designed to introduce citizens to the new e-scooter and help nervous first-timers feel comfortable on the scooter in a controlled and quiet environment. The sessions will also teach valuable skills for keeping safe on the roads (including an overview of rules of the road), and will encourage all riders to be considerate of others in the public space, particularly vulnerable people and pedestrians.

The drop-in sessions will be held at Sneinton Market from 11am to 12.30pm (four sessions at 20mins each), and from 1.30pm to 3.30pm (six more 20min sessions). All attendees will receive £10 free ride credit and (while stocks last) a free personal helmet. Attendees must be over 18 to ride a Superpedestrian e-scooter.

Training will be delivered by James Rodger, chief instructor at Scoot Fit. This organisation is the UK leader in scooter safety training, delivering instruction on push scooters and e-scooters to more than 45,000 children and adults every year. Superpedestrian has been a proud partner of Scoot Fit since January 2021.

The Nottingham shared e-scooter trial is run by Wind UK, which joined the Superpedestrian family in December 2021.
