A shoplifter has been jailed after committing new offences shortly after a judge gave him a final chance to stay out of prison.
Jordan Mawer, 29, was handed a suspended prison sentence earlier this year after stealing from multiple shops in order to fund his drug habit.
But rather than take advantage of a support package that included access to an accredited drug rehabilitation programme, he committed more shop thefts.
As a result, neighbourhood officers had no option but to arrest him again and bring him back before the courts.
Nottingham Crown Court heard that he targeted a string of Tesco supermarkets and retail stores at Castle Retail Park between 18 April and 28 June.
A plethora of evidence was compiled by neighbourhood policing teams, which led to Mawer, of Holland Road, Radford, pleading guilty to eight counts of theft and breaching his suspended sentence order.
On Tuesday (21 July), he was jailed for two years and handed a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order, which means he must not enter any Tesco or Poundland store in Nottinghamshire or any retail premises at Castle Retail Park. The CBO also means he must engage with drug rehabilitation services and attend all appointments set to address his addiction.
PC Phil Yates, of the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:
“Mawer’s persistent offending has had a considerable impact on local businesses, and this outcome at court will provide them with some much-needed respite.
“This is another sad case. I have known Mawer for a number of years and, prior to this year, he had been making good progress in turning his life around.
“Indeed, throughout 2025, he would often stop and chat with me or other officers and would joke with us. I don’t know what has triggered his behaviour and offending this year, but I hope he receives the help that he needs whilst he is in prison so that he comes out as the same person whom I knew him to be last year.”
