The main concern for commuters this morning is Nottingham city centre following yesterday’s severe congestion caused by the new Maid Marian Way contraflow.
Bus operators reported delays of up to 90 minutes at points on Monday and temporarily curtailed or diverted services before normal routes were restored later in the day. There is no major fresh collision or emergency closure identified in the early checks on Nottinghamshire’s M1, A1, A46 or A52.
Elsewhere, roadworks continue in West Bridgford, Ruddington, Arnold and on Nuthall Road, while trams are operating during the ongoing industrial action but with possible delays.
Maid Marian Way
The new traffic layout around Maid Marian Way and Broad Marsh remains in operation today after causing severe congestion across Nottingham on its first day.
Traffic is running one lane in each direction on the northbound side of Maid Marian Way, with four-way temporary traffic lights operating as demolition of the former NCP car park gets under way.
trentbarton warns that the arrangement will cause delays. Its inbound St Nicholas Church stop is also closed during the contraflow and demolition period.
Monday’s impact was substantial. Bus delays reached 90 minutes, NCT temporarily pulled some services away from parts of the city centre and trentbarton services were also badly affected. By 8pm, NCT said its affected services had returned to their normal city-centre routes and stops.
Bus stop changes remain at Maid Marian Way
Permanent temporary stopping arrangements introduced yesterday remain in place.
Nottingham City Transport says South Notts 1, Navy 4 and 48/A and Pathfinder 90 do not stop on Maid Marian Way towards the city.
Orange 34/C and Red 45/B use the Nottingham Lighting Centre stop instead of The Salutation, while Turquoise 77/C, 78/A/B and 79/B use the stop outside the Park Plaza Hotel. Red 45/B also uses Canal Street instead of the stop beneath the former car park.
NCT’s underlying warning is that the lane restrictions and temporary traffic lights will cause delays, with the demolition traffic arrangements continuing through the autumn.
Roads and motorways
No major fresh incident causing widespread disruption has been identified in the early check on the M1 through Nottinghamshire, A1, A46 or A52.
One significant National Highways scheme reaches a changeover point tonight on the A1 south of Nottinghamshire.
The long-running A1 northbound overnight closure from Stamford to Grantham is scheduled to complete after tonight’s works. From Wednesday 30 September, the scheme moves to lane-one restrictions around Grantham, including closure of the Grantham entry and exit, through Friday 2 October.
West Bridgford – Rectory Road
Gas works continue on Rectory Road in West Bridgford until Friday 9 October.
NCT Green 7, 8 and 9 towards Nottingham cannot serve Central Avenue Shops. Buses run along Rectory Road before turning onto Bridgford Road and resuming their normal route near the Co-op.
Green 5/A, 6 and 12/C/E continue to serve Central Avenue.
Ruddington – two sets of works
There are two separate disruptions affecting Ruddington.
Drainage works on Easthorpe Street mean Green 10/C diverts between 08:00 and 16:00 today, using the A60 Loughborough Road, Kirk Lane and High Street. These daytime arrangements continue until Friday 2 October.
The A60 Loughborough Road between Flawforth Lane and Bradmore Lane is also subject to overnight closures.
The road was scheduled to reopen at 06:00 this morning and closes again from 20:00 tonight until 06:00 Wednesday. The overnight programme continues through Friday morning. NCT warns that the first 10A and 10C journeys could be delayed if the road does not reopen on schedule.
Arnold – daytime diversions
Works on Arnold High Street continue today.
Between 09:30 and 15:30, buses do not serve the Arnold High Street stop behind ASDA.
The changes affect NCT 25, 53, 54, 55, 56 and 58, with Lime 56 towards Nottingham also missing Croft Road and Ravenswood Road.
The arrangements continue through Friday 2 October.
Nuthall Road – phase two
The second phase of resurfacing on Nuthall Road continues tonight.
Weekday closures operate between 19:00 and 06:00 through Wednesday 14 October, affecting Yellow 71/B and Turquoise 79/B.
The 71/B towards Bulwell diverts along Bagnall Road. The 79/B uses Melbourne Road, Aspley Lane and Broxtowe Lane, with no stops served on that diversion.
Goose Fair
Goose Fair continues at Forest Recreation Ground, and NCT is warning of delays to services passing the site through Sunday 4 October.
Routes potentially affected include services through Mansfield Road, Sherwood and the Forest Recreation Ground area, particularly as visitor numbers increase later in the day.
Trams – running today but possible delays
NET said at 6 am:
The following tram departures are cancelled: 07:00, 08:08 Hucknall 07:00, 08:09 Toton 08:37 Phoenix 07:40 Clifton
Trams are scheduled to run to all stops today, Tuesday 29 September, although industrial action continues.
NET industrial action update says staff are undertaking action short of a strike from Monday through Thursday, including the potential refusal or cancellation of overtime, meaning further service impacts remain possible.
For Goose Fair, NET’s planned frequencies today are:
- 06:00–07:00 – from every 15 minutes
- 07:00–10:00 – from every 8 minutes
- 10:00–15:00 – from every 10 minutes
- 15:00–23:00 – from every 8 minutes
- 23:00–00:00 – from every 15 minutes.
The next complete shutdown of the tram network is scheduled for Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October. Normal service is due to return on Sunday 4 October.
Rail
No major fresh disruption affecting Nottinghamshire’s rail network has been identified in the early check.
East Midlands Railway passengers should nevertheless continue checking individual journeys because planned engineering work remains under way at various locations.
National Rail’s current engineering programme does not show a major daytime closure of the principal Nottingham routes for today.
Other continuing bus disruption
Roadworks on Derby Road continue to delay NCT 18, Orange 34/C, 35/A/B, 36 and hopper 903, with the Hillside stop towards Nottingham or Jubilee Campus closed.
Gas works on Queens Road also continue to affect 18/A/B, with the Salisbury Street stop towards Beeston and Stapleford closed.
