Drivers warned of delays as Maid Marian Way switches to single lanes today

Traffic restrictions will come into force on Maid Marian Way from Monday 28 September as demolition of the former NCP car park moves to its next stage.

Maid Marian Way will be reduced to a single lane in each direction, with both directions of traffic sharing the northbound side of the road.

Greyfriar Gate and Albion Street will also close while demolition work takes place.

The changes follow the completion of enabling works at the former car park site. Contractors will now begin removing the section of the structure closest to Maid Marian Way, including part of the building which extends over the road.

Traffic cannot pass alongside or beneath the structure while this phase of demolition is under way.

Drivers are being warned to expect slower journeys and disruption, particularly during peak periods, and should follow signed diversions around Greyfriar Gate and Albion Street.

The turn from Castle Boulevard eastbound into Wilford Street also remains unavailable.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time or use alternative routes where possible.

Cyclists will still be able to use the cycle lane on Castle Boulevard and Canal Street, although they will need to dismount for a short signed section through the works area.

For pedestrians and wheelchair users, the footpath on the east side of Maid Marian Way will close, along with some routes around Greyfriar Gate and Albion Street.

The footpath on the west side will remain open, with a temporary crossing on Canal Street available for onward journeys.

Some bus stops on and around Maid Marian Way may also be suspended during the works. Passengers are advised to check with their bus operator before travelling.

The traffic layout is expected to remain in place until late October or November, depending on the progress of demolition.

Once this stage is complete, traffic will be moved onto the southbound side of Maid Marian Way while the remaining sections of the former car park are demolished.
