Officers praised for saving man’s life after he collapsed in the street

Neighbourhood police officers have been praised for helping to save the life of an unresponsive man who was found struggling to breathe.

Officers were conducting an evening patrol in Mansfield town centre at the marketplace when they saw a group of people gathered around a man lying on the floor.

As they got closer, officers realised he was unconscious and in urgent need of medical help.

The team of seven PCs and PCSOs sprang into action and began emergency first aid and CPR.

PC James Lloyd started performing chest compressions, with PC Rachel Andrews conducting rescue breaths.

The life-saving efforts continued for several minutes before a shock from a defibrillator was used to help stabilise the man.

PC Lloyd Rickersey then continued chest compressions as officers waited for East Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics to arrive.

Other officers, including PC Mia Carvell, PC Alex Richmond, PCSO Lewis North, and PCSO Danielle Rose, helped to keep the area clear, identify witnesses, and source CCTV of the incident.

The man, aged in his sixties, later regained consciousness in the ambulance and was taken to hospital for further treatment following the incident which happened at around 9.30pm on 27 December, 2025.

After suffering a suspected heart attack, he is now recovering.

The Mansfield North neighbourhood team officers have since been praised for their ‘exemplary’ actions.

Chief Inspector Chris Sutcliffe, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “It was a case of right place, right time, for this team of officers.

“Faced with a man who had collapsed in the street, they acted without a second thought, immediately drawing on their first aid training to provide vital care in those critical first moments.

“Their calmness under pressure, teamwork, and determination to help quite literally made the difference.

“I have no doubt that had this man not received help when he did, the outcome of this incident could have been very different.

“It’s no exaggeration to say their swift actions helped save a life.

“No two days are ever the same in policing, and these officers should all be very proud of their exemplary actions.

“Their professionalism and commitment to helping the public is a textbook example of policing at its very best.”
