Drivers travelling around Nottingham will soon benefit from new digital traffic information signs.
The project, which is being delivered as part of Nottingham City Council’s transport programme, will replace the city’s existing Parksmart real-time parking information system.
The council has appointed Swarco UK and Ireland Ltd to deliver the scheme, which will see 43 existing signs replaced across the city centre and 12 additional signs installed on key routes into Nottingham.
Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said: “We all know how important travel is to daily life, whether it’s getting to work, education and essential services. I am investing £2m in this system so that people travelling through Nottingham can have greater confidence that they can get where they need to be, on time and with minimal stress.
“Working together with Nottingham City Council, we are delivering real, visible changes to daily life: easing congestion, improving regional connectivity and modernising essential services. This is how we build a stronger, greener and better-connected region for everyone.”
The current Parksmart network has been in operation for around 15 years. However, the technology has become increasingly difficult to maintain, with some signs no longer functioning as replacement parts are no longer readily available.
Unlike the current signs, the new digital displays will provide real-time parking availability alongside information about road incidents, diversions, major events and wider network disruption, helping drivers make informed decisions about their journeys and reducing unnecessary congestion across the city.
Councillor Patience Ifediora, Executive Member for Regional Development, Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “This investment marks a significant step forward in modernising the way we communicate with drivers travelling into Nottingham. The new digital signs will not only make it easier for people to find available parking, but will also allow us to provide up-to-date information about events, incidents and changes to the road network in real time.”
Installation is expected to take place throughout the 2026/27 financial year, with dates for individual locations to be confirmed as the delivery programme is finalised.
