Paediatric Radiology Department is officially opened after £3 million makeover

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) announced that the Paediatric Radiology Department has officially re-opened with new and improved facilities that will expand capacity and improve the quality of care children receive.

Jo and Sparky, from Greatest Hits radio, opened the new department at Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) this week. The opening was also attended by NUH colleagues, including Sumit Jagani, Head of Radiology Services and Victoria Hammonds, Account Manager at FUJI.

The Trust invested £3 million into improving the department which now has 50 percent more space, with a new waiting area and two new larger x-ray rooms. The larger rooms allow easier hoisting of patients with more room for beds and wheelchairs.

The department is now equipped with new state of the art Fuji x-ray equipment, including a long imaging detector which uses a low radiation dose, an important factor when imaging children, and allows the whole spine and lower body to be captured in one image. The long imaging detector is one of only four across the country.

The walls of the new rooms have been painted with themed murals to help provide a calm and stimulating environment for our patients, their families, and staff.

Work for the new expansion has taken around three years with other departments being re-located during the process.

Commenting on the improvements, Sumit said: “It is fantastic to see the new department re-open. The larger footprint and x-ray rooms allows us to perform over 16,000 examinations per year.

“We also now have a dedicated quiet room to support difficult conversations with our patients and carers. The new spacious waiting area can accommodate beds, hoists, and supportive medical equipment, which allows us to be inclusive in the care we deliver.

“Having the equipment, environment and space complements the skill and enthusiasm of our team and creates the excellent patient experience we strive for.”

Victoria Hammonds said: “It’s FUJIFILM Healthcare’s great pleasure to expand our partnership with QMC. Both FUJIFILM and QMC share the same patient centric values, and the new equipment looks fantastic with its child-friendly wall graphics. Here at FUJIFILM, we are very proud to support the hardworking team at QMC and continue to be a trusted Healthcare supplier throughout the region.”

Nigel Gregory, Chief Executive of Nottingham Hospitals Charity, said: “Thanks to our supporters, we’ve been able to fund special additions for the new paediatric radiology department, such as colourful wall art and privacy screens, to help make appointments less daunting for young patients.

“We hope the jungle and space themed wall art will provide a welcome distraction for children undergoing x-rays and scans, helping to reduce their anxiety and speed up appointments. Thank you to all our supporters who have donated to make this possible.”
