Police issue warning over homophobic chanting ahead of Nottingham Forest v Brighton game

Nottinghamshire Police and Nottingham Forest have warned football fans that homophobic chanting will not be tolerated at tonight’s Premier League match against Brighton and Hove Albion (kick-off 7.30pm).

Chief Inspector Jon Foy, who will be the police commander for the televised match at the City Ground, said: “Over the years we know Brighton and Hove Albion FC have had to put up with a small minority of people who have started or joined in with homophobic chants.

“Alongside clubs, we take a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of hate crime, including the use of homophobic language.

“We will be taking positive action to identify anyone found to be using hate speech and would urge anyone who overhears this type of abuse to report it to us straight away.

“The vast majority of football fans behave very responsibly, but sadly there remains a small minority who view football as an excuse to do and say things that are just totally unacceptable.

“If this happens, We will take robust action with arrests, criminal investigations, and where appropriate prosecutions at court.

“Offenders may also receive lengthy banning orders, preventing them from attending matches, as a result of their behaviour.”
