Police plane tracks M1 van and suspects into Nottinghamshire woodland

The crew of a police plane and officers on the ground teamed up to track down a suspect after a high-speed pursuit.

Police spotted a Ford Transit van on the M1 shortly after 10pm on Monday (1 December).

Based on intelligence, officers pursued the vehicle as it failed to stop and continued from Barlborough and towards Worksop.

It was then abandoned at Daneshill Lake, near Torworth, after crashing through two sets of closed locked gates.

A suspect fled on foot through the woodland, as the crew of a National Police Air Service (NPAS) aircraft circled above.

The crew on the fixed wing aeroplane was then able to use their camera to direct officers on the ground to a figure in a nearby building.

A 34-year-old man was consequently arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, and drug driving.

He was also arrested on suspicion of driving with no licence, driving whilst disqualified, and criminal damage.

PC Abby Mason, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This was an excellent bit of teamwork between our officers on the ground and an aeroplane crew up in the air.

“Without the assistance from the camera on the aeroplane we may not have caught up with this suspect, so this is a great resource for us to be able to call on.

“We’d also be interested in speaking to the passenger captured in the video.”
