Police response after driver threatened with an axe

Police officers keep their cool as they respond to reports of a driver threatened by a man with an axe in tonight’s action-packed episode of Police Interceptors.

A car suspected to have been involved in an earlier road rage incident in Nottingham city centre activated an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera and was then followed by members of Nottinghamshire Police’s specialist road crime team.

A short while later the officers stopped the vehicle after it turned off the A6097.

When they searched the car they found an axe and a hammer along with a small bag of white powder which was tested and confirmed to be cocaine.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a Class A drug and racially-aggravated public order.

Recalling the incident Police Constable Dan Butler, one of the officers involved in the stop on 15 September 2021, said:

“While I’m pleased we were able to safely resolve this incident without injury, it is a timely reminder of the risks front-line police officers face every day they are on duty.

“We always take reports of incidents involving weapons extremely seriously and thankfully we managed to stop the vehicle quite quickly.

“We explained why we had stopped it and searched one of the occupants as other officers arrived and searched the vehicle.

“It can be challenging dealing with reports of this nature and that’s why it’s so important for us to always keep a calm head and act professionally to deescalate situations like this one, acquire evidence and effectively deal with incidents without anyone coming to harm.”

Meanwhile, in tonight’s episode, interceptors are quickly on scene to support Operation Reacher team colleagues on the hunt for a suspect wanted on recall to prison.

Nottinghamshire Police’s ‘eye in the sky’ drone took to the skies as part of a swift coordinated effort to find the man.

It led to an officer jumping out of a police van to arrest a 57-year-old man after he was spotted outside some shops in the Cinderhill area, on 26 August 2021.

As well as this, interceptors and dog officers work together to arrest suspects after reports of suspicious activity at a motorway service station during the dead of night, and members of the force’s dedicated knife crime teams spring into action to make arrests and seizures in Arnold and Mansfield respectively.
