Police tackle speeding drivers in Basford and Wollaton

Police officers have been taking to the streets with speed guns to slow motorists down.

Officers positioned themselves at different locations across Basford and Wollaton in a bid to deter speeding drivers.

During the high-visibility operation on Friday (27 January) afternoon, four drivers were pulled over for going over the speed limit.

Each of them was given guidance about sticking to the speed limit at the roadside by officers from the city west neighbourhood policing team.

The operation also led to a vehicle being seized by cops, after the driver was found to have no insurance.

PC Cameron Toone, of the city west neighbourhood policing team, said:

“Operations like the one carried out on Friday play a key role in helping deter motorists from speeding and educating them about the consequences this can have.

“After listening to what the community told us they think we should focus on, we selected stopping speeding as one of our chosen priorities for the Basford and Wollaton areas.

“When we go out with the speed guns, our main objective isn’t to punish people, it’s all about educating them so that we can keep everyone in our communities safe on the roads.

“Pulling someone over and having that chat with them about not driving too fast could ultimately prevent an accident from happening further down the line.

“It’s fair to say that nobody wants to see anyone get hurt on the roads, which is why we’re so committed to working with the community to prevent this from happening.”

This was one of several operations conducted by officers across the city west area this week as part of neighbourhood policing week of action, which runs from 23-29 January 2023.

Tackling youth-related antisocial behaviour (ASB) is another chosen priority for the neighbourhood policing team, with officers also carrying out different positive actions to crack down on this type of offending.

Cops rode the tram between the Wilkinson Street and Highbury Vale stops in Basford on Thursday (26 January) evening as part of an operation to limit ASB or other low-level offending on board.

Working in partnership with Nottingham Express Transit (NET), these visible patrols allowed officers to deter any ASB on public transport, while also positively engaging with members of the public.

Officers also conducted an operation on Tuesday (24 January) to raise awareness about problems being caused by off-road bikes around Broxtowe Country Park.

By knocking on doors and handing out leaflets to shops and houses around the Bilborough area, the neighbourhood policing team were able to let the public know who to contact to report any incidents of this nature.
