Shoppers treated to Valentine’s Day performance at Victoria Centre

Shoppers at Nottingham’s Victoria Centre were surprised on Friday (9 February) as a group of music students entertained passers-by with a Valentine’s Day-inspired performance.

Six music students from Nottingham Trent University, disguised as regular shoppers, appeared at the centre to entertain shoppers and serenade a couple whose relationship began at the centre.

The students performed a live brass and piano rendition of The Beatles’ 1967 song, ‘All You Need Is Love’, while Victoria Centre’s team handed out red roses.

Not only were regular visitors stunned by the musical outburst, but so were Gabriel and Jess Cooper, a couple who met while working at John Lewis & Partners nine years ago.

Chosen as ‘stars’ of the centre’s 50th birthday celebrations in 2022, because of their connection to the centre, the couple now have two children and live in Sherwood.

To mark their ninth Valentine’s Day together, Gabriel and Jess were presented with some gifts from the centre, including a bottle of wine and a selection of chocolates.

To encourage shoppers to feel the love this Valentine’s Day, visitors to the centre will also find a red phone box covered in winter florals and a red lips-shaped sofa, perfect for selfies with loved ones.

Commenting on the flash mob, and its other Valentine’s Day-inspired activities, Nigel Wheatley, centre director at Victoria Centre, said:

“As Valentine’s Day is all about showing your love and appreciation towards those special, here at Victoria Centre, we thought what better way to show our appreciation for our shoppers than by surprising them all with a spontaneous flash mob, all about love.

“It was also great to see our very own Victoria Centre piano get involved in the performance, which was redesigned last year by a local artist to showcase what we all love so much about the city we live in.

“We hope our shoppers enjoy the activities we have on throughout the centre, between 9th – 14th February, and that Gabriel and Jess, in particular, remember this Valentine’s Day for years to come.”

Gabriel, added:

“When Jess and I met, we never thought we would be back outside John Lewis and surprised with a flash mob, let alone presented with some gifts to help us celebrate our ninth Valentine’s Day. The centre holds a special place in our hearts, and we love bringing our two children here to see where their parents first met.

“Our thanks go to Victoria Centre and the students at Nottingham Trent University who have made this year’s Valentine’s Day extra special.”
