Six people taken to court over West Bridgford and Nottingham shop thefts

Six people have appeared in court following investigations into shop thefts from stores in Nottingham and West Bridgford.

Paul Barton, 55, of no fixed address, was identified after CCTV showed a man wearing a Detroit Red Wings ice hockey cap during thefts from Sainsbury’s Local in Carlton Street.

Police said further enquiries linked Barton to five thefts from the store on the same day and incidents at Tesco Express in Fletcher Gate, Waterstones in Bridlesmith Gate and Asda in West Bridgford.

Barton was jailed for 16 weeks at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 1 August. He was also given a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from the four stores.

Five other suspects were identified during the wider investigation:

  • Mark Faulkner, 41, of Alexandra Street, Carrington, was charged with stealing trays of Pot Noodles from Tesco Express in Fletcher Gate, two bottles of wine from Tesco Express in South Parade and multiple items from One Beyond in the Victoria Centre. He received a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for one year, and was ordered to attend a rehabilitation programme and pay compensation.
  • Lee Boylan, 48, of Ford Street, New Basford, was charged with stealing £33.50 of steaks and a £6.50 pack of butter from Sainsbury’s Local in Carlton Street. He pleaded guilty to both offences and was ordered to pay compensation to the store.
  • Carl Jackson, 43, of Grimston Road, Bobbers Mill, was charged with eight shop thefts involving stores including Tesco Express, Sainsbury’s Local and the Co-op. He was granted bail and is awaiting trial.
  • Calid Short, 30, of Sherwood Avenue, Mansfield, was charged with stealing £37.20 of drinks from Sainsbury’s Local in Carlton Street. He received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, and was ordered to pay compensation and comply with a drug rehabilitation requirement.
  • Abigail Gregory, 41, of no fixed address, was charged with six shop thefts from Sainsbury’s Local and Tesco Express. She received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, and was ordered to attend 15 rehabilitation activity days. She was also made subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order.

The investigations were carried out by PC Phil Yates, a Nottingham city centre retail crime officer, with support from other Nottinghamshire Police teams.
