Suspects found with pockets full of jewellery in Nottingham burglary

Police discovered two suspects with their pockets filled with jewellery after interrupting a burglary at a house.

Officers received reports that a break-in was in progress in Newlyn Gardens, Aspley, at around 9.30pm on Monday (4 September).

When a response team arrived at the address minutes later, they heard the sound of breaking glass and saw two people inside the property.

At that point, the approaching officers were spotted by the suspects who tried to make a run for it but didn’t get far before they were detained outside and searched.

Jewellery was then discovered inside their pockets, while a car key was also seized for a vehicle parked outside that had been reported as stolen in a separate burglary in Leicestershire.

Two men, aged 19 and 41, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

The 41-year-old suspect was also arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence.

Detective Sergeant Nigel Malik, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Thanks to the fast response time of our officers, we were able to interrupt this break-in as it was taking place and prevent any items from being stolen.

“After detaining two suspects at the scene, we also managed to seize a set of car keys that were taken during a separate break-in, so this was obviously a great result.

“Nottinghamshire Police takes all reports of burglary extremely seriously as we understand how much of a negative impact this crime can have on people’s lives, in a multitude of different ways.

“We also fully appreciate how important it is that we get to these reports as quickly as possible, as we managed to do in this instance, and the public can have a major role in helping us do this.

“If you suspect a burglary is taking place at your home, or in a neighbouring property, don’t hesitate, but call 999 in an emergency, so that we can act.

“The public should also report break-ins that are not in the process of taking place to 101. Our inquiries are still ongoing into the burglary in Newlyn Gardens, so we’d ask anyone with information to call us on this number, quoting incident 873 of 4 September 2023.”
